The Burnett Buggy

Among Burnett’s frequent trips were those to his far-flung ranches. After construction of his private railcar, he traveled by train from his Fort Worth residence to Paducah, the first leg in his commute. From there, he hitched his horse to a buggy for the 30-mile ride south to the Four Sixes headquarters in Guthrie.

Although Burnett kept several buggies, the one on exhibit at the National Ranching Heritage Center was one of the finest ever built by the Hynds Buggy Co. and is considered very rare. The Burnett buggy was donated to the National Ranching Heritage Center in 1976 by Mrs. Charles [Anne] Tandy, Burnett’s granddaughter.

Burk Burnett's Private Rail Car

After construction of the Four Sixes headquarters house in Guthrie, Burk Burnett’s residence remained in Fort Worth, where his businesses were based. He traveled extensively, and to facilitate his ventures out, Burnett had a private Pullman car built as part of the Quanah, Acme & Pacific Railway, of which he was company vice president and a director.

He was the first private citizen to have his own car, and it was the most modern and thoroughly appointed car the company had manufactured. Technically belonging to the QA&P Railway Co., Burnett was the lessee, and it was at his exclusive disposal.

The 80-foot long Pullman carried the number 6666 and had a steel underframe, three state rooms with massive brass beds, a sitting and dining room, an observation room and a kitchen. The car could sleep 11 persons. It was furnished in mahogany and had more than 100 electrical lights, supplied by a dual lighting system. Burnett’s quarters included a private shower bath.

The 6666 brand was inlaid on paneling, sewed into all the bedding and linen, and it was engraved on china and glassware.
