In 1881, Daniel Baldwin Gardner and his cousin and lifelong friend Eugene Flewellyn Williams partnered to purchase a herd of cattle and horses along the South Wichita River—laying the foundation for what would become one of the most iconic ranches in Texas history. With just 2,600 longhorns, 70 horses, and a shared vision, the Pitchfork Land and Cattle Company was born.

The official formation of the company came in 1883, when Gardner and Williams joined four other investors to establish the Pitchfork Land and Cattle Company, headquartered in St. Louis. Gardner would serve as general manager for the next 45 years, setting the tone for the generations that followed.

Now 142 years later, the Pitchfork continues to operate under the leadership of Brooks Hodges and the descendants of Eugene Williams. The ranch spans approximately 175,000 acres across King and Dickens Counties, with additional holdings in Waurika, Oklahoma.

Rooted in history and tradition, the Pitchfork stands as a lasting symbol of integrity, stewardship, and the enduring spirit of the West.

The Beggs family’s legacy in ranching dates back to 1876, when George Beggs Sr. began leasing land in what is now Handley, Texas, dealing in cattle and horses. By 1893, he had moved to Fort Worth and opened a livestock commission and loan business in the Stockyards District, marking the start of a family enterprise that has spanned five generations.

His sons, W.D. and John Erin “Crowbar,” originally operated as Beggs Brothers, later joined by their youngest brother George Jr. In the 1920s and ’30s, the family expanded their operations to several ranches across Parker, Garza, Kent, Dickens, King, and Stonewall counties.

In 1941, the next generation, Ed Farmer Beggs and George Beggs III, introduced a new cattle brand inspired by their father’s ties to Great Britain: the English Pound mark (£). It became the symbol of the partnership and later, the official brand of Beggs Cattle Company, incorporated in 1950.

Today, Beggs Cattle Company continues to raise cattle and Quarter Horses with the same dedication to quality and tradition. Ed Farmer Beggs II oversees operations in Parker County, while George Beggs IV manages the family ranches across West Texas.

Recognized as an AQHA Best Remuda Award winner, the Beggs program exemplifies a long-standing commitment to raising top-quality horses that reflect the needs and values of working ranch life.

For more than a century, the Beggs name has stood for integrity, grit, and a deep commitment to the land, livestock, and legacy.

Over the years, the program has also made its mark in the show pen, producing legends like Wimpy, Mr. San Peppy, and Peppy San Badger — names that forever shaped the Quarter Horse world. Today’s horses are no different. With strategic breeding rooted in tradition and elevated by innovation, King Ranch continues to produce horses ready to go to work — whether that’s on the ranch or in the arena.
